According to his WWI service record, he had previous service: in South African Boer War for 2 years; in India for 2 years with. British forces; with New South Wales Lancers for 7 years; and with Waimarino Mounted Rifles in New Zealand for 2 years. WIA (Wounded In Action) 19 April 17 with a GSW (Gun Shot Wound) to the chest and again on 25 November 1917 with a GSW to the right hand at Gaza. After he recovered he was posted to the Rarotongan Company 26 January 1918. On 19 May 1918 he was admitted to hospital until 22 June 1918 and then transferred to the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Bde Training Regiment & Base Depot. He was then posted as second in command of a squadron in the Auckland Mounted Rifles and in June 1919 was promoted to the Officer Commanding of the Squadron. He embarked for New Zealand in July 1919. He was awarded a MiD (Mentioned in Despatches) on 5/6/1919 (London Gazette 12 January 1920, p508).
