On enlistment on the 12th of July 1915, he was employed in Auckland New Zealand. Arrived Suez 26 October 1915. Posted to Auckland Infantry Battalion 19 January 1916. Embarked for France 9 July 1916 and re-joined with the New Zealand (Māori Pioneer) Battalion as a bomber 9 November 1916. Returned from leave to "In the Field" 29 July 1917. Killed in Action while with the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion 7 October 1917. Buried “in the field” 3 miles north east of Ypres, Belgium, and later moved to New Irish Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
