Enlisted 29 September 1915 in Rarotonga. Disembarked from SS Navua at Suez 15 March 1916 and embarked for France from Alexandria with the NZ Pioneer Battalion 9 April 1916. On duty with the unit “In the Field" 3 August 1917. Admitted to 4th NZ Field Ambulance 3 December 1917 with burns to face and hands due to a cordite explosion. Transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station 4 December 1917 and to the 10th Stationary Hospital on the same day. Rejoined the NZ Pioneer Battalion 12 January 1918 and was transferred to Egypt 14 January 1918. Embarked for France 21 January 1918 and was posted to the Rarotongan Company 7 February 1918. Admitted to 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, Jaffa 28 September 1918 and then to the 47th Stationary Hospital at Gaza 1 October 1918. Passed away of lobar pneumonia 4 October 1918 in Gaza, Egypt. Buried in the Gaza War Cemetery with Chaplain J Anderson officiating. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records and his military headstone spell his name as “Kamati”. His military documentation also uses this name on some occasions.
